The fire was at once answered with vigor by the battery in command of Dalliba, as well as by others, and continued with good effect until about 10 o'clock at night. The cannonade was understood to be the prelude to a crossing of the river and a close attack upon the fort. This State of affairs led the Americans to an inspection of their force and a consideration as to its most favorable disposition to continue the defense.
