when it went to Alexandria, where on the 11th it embarked with its corps on transports for Smithville, N. C, at the mouth of Cape Fear river, reaching that point on the 15th. On the 17th the movement was commenced against Fort Anderson, and on the 18th our troops were advanced to within a few yards of the forts and intrenched under a heavy fire of musketry and artillery, and on the morning of the 19th occupied the fort, the 23d Michigan being the first to enter.
