He renewed the. attack at intervals until 10 P. M., when he again made an assault and planted his colors on the works in front of the 23d Michigan, and was repulsed after a hand-to-hand fight. At 11 P. M. our troops withdrew and crossed the river, moving in the direction of Nashville, and arrived there at 2 P. M., December 1st, having in 48 hours marched 50 miles and fought the battle of Franklin, the men being on less than quarter rations. In the engagement Captain D. M. Averill was killed.
