Civil War Infantry

Twenty Third Infantry

A report of Colonel Spaulding says: An assault on the enemy's works was ordered. The assaulting column was formed in three lines, this regiment being in the second line. Advancing over an open field, within easy rifle shot of the enemy's position, under a terrible fire of musketry and artillery, the regiment in front of the 23d broke and was driven back, and the one in our rear followed them. We pushed forward until we reached a deep creek which was impossible to cross, and held our position until ordered back. In this advance the regiment lost 62 killed and wounded. Lieutenant Wm. C. Stewart was killed.
