Civil War Infantry

Twenty Third Infantry

The regiment assisted actively in the defense of Knoxville until the siege was raised, on the 5th of December. On the 7th of December it marched in pursuit of the retreating rebels, and on the 13th went into camp at Blain's Cross Roads, where it was stationed until the 25th, when it received orders to proceed to Strawberry Plains and build fortifications at that place. From the commencement of the retreat to Knoxville to this time the regiment suffered greatly.
