At daylight next morning the retreat was continued. Marching in the direction of Knoxville the retreating troops were overtaken by the enemy near Campbell's station at midday on the 16th, when a severe engagement immediately ensued.
Which engagement is described by a correspondent in the Louisville Journal as follows:
" One brigade of the 9th corps was in advance, the 2d brigade, of the 2d division, 23d corps in the center, and one brigade of the 9th corps as rear guard.
