The 23d remained at Bowling Green until May 29th, 1863, employed in garrisoning that post and guarding railroad trains. May 31st the regiment, then in command of Major O. L. Spaulding, Colonel Chapin being on special duty commanding troops at Carthage, arrived at Glasgow. Marching from Glasgow it proceeded to Tompkinsville, from which place it started July 4th in pursuit of the rebels under General John H. Morgan.
