Michigan Regiments
Twenty-Sixth Regiment Infantry
A grasshopper could not have lived through the pelting of that leaden storm; and but for the fact that our troops were protected by breastworks they would have been swept away to a man. "
On the 2d of June, 1864, the regiment arrived at Cold Harbor, and advancing as skirmishers on the enemy near Gaines's Hill, succeeded in driving him into his intrenehtnents. It afterwards charged their works across an open field, but finding them occupied by the enemy in force, and being under a fire of grape and canister, the regiment was obliged to retire.
