Twenty Seventh Regiment Infantry
from the Red Book of Michigan:
" Prominent among the chain of works in front of our army at Petersburg was Fort Mahon. It had been decided to attack that point at daybreak, on the day before the evacuation of Petersburg. The assaulting column is formed of regiments in mass; the point of attack about 300 yards distant; the main assault to be made by a large brigade of new troops. The brigade of the 27th Michigan is in their supporting column; the advance column is on the move. Soon a heavy fire of musketry and artillery is opened by the enemy;
