In that position it remained, doing very heavy and arduous picket duty until April 1st, 1865, when it was ordered to make a demonstration on the enemy's line directly in front of Mine Fort, as it was supposed that he was withdrawing from that point. The demonstration was made, but it was found that he was still in force, and the command fell back to the main line of works again, when a movement was made one mile to the left, where a line of battle was formed in rear of Fort Sedgwick, and preparations made to charge at daybreak on the following morning.
