But it took an hour to do that. As his antagonists pressed on his flank he changed his
and other heavy masses. All three of his brigade commanders had been killed, his ammunition train had been captured, he could not resist much longer, for the cartridge boxes of his men were empty. The time had come when even Sheridan must. fall back. But if he had no powder he had steel.
