Twenty-eighth Regiment Infantry

Lieutenant John E. Kenyon died February 2, 1866, of wounds received January 27th previous, while arresting murderers in Pitt county, N. C. While in service it had met the enemy at Nashville, Tenn., December 12 to 16, 1864; Wise's Forks, N. C., March 8, 9, 10, 1865.
The entire membership of the 28th had been 1, 245, while its loss was 128, being 1 officer and 4 men killed in action, and 1 officer and 122 men died of disease.
Forget not our wounded companions, who stood
In the day of distress by our side;
While the moss of the valley grew red with their blood,
They stirred not, but conquered and died. "
