The gun immediately opened a well directed fire upon the house, orchard, and woods in which the rebels' were massed. At the same time a charge was ordered, which was executed in most gallant style, clearing the enemy from the house, orchard, and fence, where they had lain during the day, and driving them into the woods. We were soon met by a counter charge in such immensely superior numbers that we were obliged to fall back to our former position, which was held with the greatest obstinacy for three-quarters of an hour,
