but soon threw forward their reserve brigade, and we were forced back with severe loss to our first position. We were now fighting from eight to ten times our number. At times the fighting was hand-to-hand, and was maintained over half an hour, when we were again forced to take a new position. General Morgan now demanded our surrender, stating that he had an entire division, and further resistance was useless. He was invited to ' come and take us, ' which he neglected to do.
