American Civil War
TWENTIETH REGIMENT INFANTRY
By evening of May 9th our entire force had crossed to the north of the Cumberland except the two parties already mentioned. The 20th had just crossed, when a courier arrived with the intelligence that Wiltsie's force had been attacked by a large body and driven back, while the pickets under Barnes were being attacked also. By direction of Lieutenant Colonel Smith, commanding the regiment, I rode at once to the front and found the pickets, with a remnant of Wiltsie's party, falling back to the river.
