TWENTIETH REGIMENT INFANTRY
then Major of the regiment, says:
"We had fallen back from Monticello to the Cumberland river, near Jamestown, at a point where the river makes a grand curve, known as Horse Shoe Bend. On Friday night, the 8th of May, we had sent out a hundred picked men under Captain W. D. Wiltsie, in search of the band of the notorious ' Champ Fargurson. ' Companies A, C, and D were placed on picket under Captain George C. Barnes, at the ' narrows, ' two miles from the ferry.
