' Major Powell, myself, and several other officers went then to the headquarters of Colonel Peabody, of the 25th Missouri, commanding our brigade, and related to him what had transpired. We remained there until about midnight, when Colonel Peabody ordered out two companies from the 12th Michigan and two companies from the 25th Missouri, under command of Major Powell, upon his own responsibility. '
