Civil War American
THIRTEENTH REGIMENT INFANTRY
On the 20th the regiment, with its division, arrived in the valley of the Sequacheo, after a march of sixty miles over the Cumberland mountains. Two days had been occupied in reaching the summit of the mountains, which here rise to the height of 3, 000 feet, the roads being so steep and difficult that the guns, baggage, and ammunition trains had to be hauled up by hand. The division, having crossed the Tennessee at Shell Mound, moved on Chattanooga, and on the morning of the 8th of September that town was taken, the 13th being among the first to enter the city.
