Civil War
Third Regiment Infantry
I am proud to address the people of a State which does not owe to the union army a single man. I rejoice in my heart that I stand on soil honored not only by the noble examples of its citizens at home, but by the brilliant reputation on battle-fields as I have seen them, of the heroic soldiers of Michigan.
"I have also another desire to pass through this State. In the spring of 1861, 1, in common with others of my fellow countrymen, felt it my duty to take up arms, throw out my banner, and call upon them to rally round my standard. With gratitude I remember that from Michigan I received one hundred as gallant men as ever shouldered a musket or followed a leader.
