Since then the division has performed some of the most remarkable marches on record, and has participated with its usual zeal and heroism in the battle of Gettysburg and the affair at Wapping Heights, in both of which occasions it was noticed that the possessors of these decorations were specially prominent in deeds of bravery and prowess. In view of this fact, and to satisfy himself of the efficacy of medals or other awards of merit, caused an investigation to be made into the fate of these Chanceliorsville heroes in their subsequent encounters with the enemy up to and including the Gettysburg campaign.
