At Chancellorsville the 3d was in Sickles's 3d corps, driving the enemy on the morning of the first day, but are flanked and cut off, fall back, charge into the woods and open communication. Fired into next day at daylight, a severe struggle ensues. Again forced back, the enemy advance in overwhelming numbers to crush the Federal line; they are met and checked by a heavy fire on their advance, they hesitate, waver, and are still.
