THIRD REGIMENT INFANTRY.
Shall our good swords in scabbards rust,
Our flag, dishonored, trail in dust, When rebels seek our subjugation? Perish the thought! Our blades are drawn, Swift to defend our bleeding nation. "
The recruitment of the 3d regiment commenced almost simultaneously with that of the 2d, pressing hard to get into service, but was not accepted until May 15th, 1861, by the following order:
Military Department, Michigan, Adjutant General's Office Detroit, Mich., May 13th, 1861

The 3d Regiment, already formed and rendezvoused at Grand Rapids, consists of the following field and staff officers and companies, and are hereby appointed and assigned. Company officers will be appointed when mustered:
