About 4 P. M. the skirmishers were driven in by a heavy mass of the enemy advancing steadily, firing occasional shots. He was allowed to approach within a short distance of the works when a well directed and heavy fire was opened on him, checking his advance, and before he could •recover from its effect Grummond with his command leaped the works and charged with the bayonet, being immediately supported by Lum's command.
