He was on the opposite side of the gully from me, and in order to understand him I sprang across the gully near him. Neither of us having received any orders, we agreed to continue the retreat. I gave the command, forward! and the men leaping out of the gulley started on the double-quick to the rear, but in perfect order. I was within a few feet of them on the side toward the enemy. As they left the ravine I jumped across it, about which time a shell exploding a short distance from me threw a quantity of earth into my back with such force that it knocked me down upon my face, and I found myself gasping for breath.
