Considering all the circumstances attending the foregoing attack upon said train and the large number killed and wounded, no less than eighteen out of forty-six, officers and men inclusive, the conclusion is irresistible that both officers and men behaved with the utmost bravery. "
During August and September of that year, the regiment marched from Murfreesboro to Columbia, thence via Athens and Huntsville to Stevenson, having traveled from August 19th to September 7th a distance of 226 miles. Subsequently, during September, the regiment moved to Bridgeport, Ala.
