The ex-President was then crossing our front, or had crossed it two days before, going toward the southwest, with an escort of four brigades of cavalry, under the command of Duke, Ferguson, and Dibrell, with scattered detachments of Vaughn's, Harris's, and Butler's commands, all of which had evaded the terms of the surrender of Johnston to Sherman. By a wide detour and rapid march we were thrown across the front of his line of march at Athens, Ga. His escort did not relish any more fighting, and began rapidly to fall apart. It was reported that they were paid off with the script which they were trying to get away with.
