10th Regiment Cavalry

Major Dunn, (10th Mich.), in this action bore a most conspicuous and gallant part, for which he received the commission of major by brevet from the Secretary of War. " General Stoneman moved onto Salisbury. I need not go fully into details of that engagement for they can be found recorded in the histories. One incident is worth mentioning, as it illustrates the valor of Michigan troops. "When General Stoneman went to capture Salisbury, N. C, he met the enemy at a little stream a few miles from town. The stream had very high and precipitous banks and could not be forded. The only way to cross it was by a narrow bridge, which was effectually commanded by the enemy's artillery.
