10th Regiment Cavalry

the statement that Breckenridge closely followed Gillem to the vicinity of Knoxville, and that he withdrew from the vicinity of Knoxville on the 18th, and that General Ammen, reinforced by 1,500 men from Chattanooga, reoc-cupied Strawberry Plains the same day. I suppose, however, that Van Horn took his statement from General Thomas's report, in which he says: 'Following up his success, Breckenridge continued moving southwest, through Strawberry Plains, to the immediate vicinity of Knoxville, but on the 18th withdrew as rapidly as he had advanced. General Ammon's troops, reinforced by 1,500 men from Chattanooga, re-occupied Strawberry Plains on that day.' "
