Breckenridge was stopped at Strawberry Plains by a force less than one sixth of his own number. He came no nearer Knoxville than that, which is about 16 miles. General Ammon had his headquarters at Knoxville, but whether he was there at that time I do not know. I certainly had no communication from him regarding the light, and I certainly have no reason to suppose that he knew anything more about it than General Thomas, who was at Nashville. You may judge of our surprise, then, at seeing in the telegraphic reports that General Ammon had repulsed Breckenridge at Strawberry Plains after a stubborn fight! my surprise, however, is still greater to find in Van Horn's history of the Army of the Cumberland
