There upon these poor, demoralized fellows, saddled and bridled in hot haste and started for Knoxville, leaving the ground strewn with sabres, pistols, and carbines, from which others found it convenient to replenish their supplies. On the morning of the 15th Major I. C. Smith arrived with his command, giving more particulars of the stampede. The telegraph being in operation, I telegraphed General Tillson that if he deemed it important to hold that post I thought it , would be well to send reinforcements, and on the 16th 350 men of the 2d Ohio Heavy Artillery arrived. A scouting party sent out during the day reported the enemy advancing in heavy force, and it was reported that he Was also crossing the river to get in our rear.
