10th Regiment Cavalry
It was not expected that I would meet the enemy before I reached Kingsport, but unfortunately for the success of my enterprise, I met them at Bean's Station. I at once ordered Captain Roberts, with two companies, to charge them. One of the companies was commanded by Lieutenant, afterwards Captain Brooks. Brooks was smarting under some ill treatment from a superior officer, and immediately dashed forward with his company. After routing the rebels handsomely and charging them for a couple of miles, Captain Roberts wisely ordered a halt; but Brooks had gone ahead with a few men, and actually kept up that charge, with three men with him, for a, distance Of ten miles and a half.
