Sixth Regiment Infantry

The 6th Michigan was divided into detachments, commanded respectively by Captains Corden, Spitzer, and Soule, the loss of the regiment being 20 killed, 43 wounded, and 6 missing. General Williams was killed in the engagement while mounted, and while saying to the 21st Indiana, "Boys, your field officers are all gone; I will lead you. "
In General Butler's order we found the following paragraphs:
" The commanding general has carefully revised the official reports of the action of August 5th, at Baton Rouge, to collect the evidence of the gallant deeds and meritorious services of those engaged in that brilliant victory.
