American Civil War
SIXTEENTH REGIMENT INFANTRY
'We have taken the enemy's first line of works; can you take the second?' shouted General Griffin. ' Yes, yes, was the responsive shout from a thousand throats, and they did take the second line, as bravely as they took the first. In the second line was a second redoubt. Brave heroes had fallen, but a splendid victory, a double victory, had been won. It was all the work of a few minutes, a work requiring less time than I have taken to write it. The second line was on the farther edge of the open field, and beyond were woods. Through the latter woods the beaten enemy fled in haste. Two brigades of Heth's division were in the force opposing us. No artillery was used on our side.
