On the 5th it was detailed to guard the wagon train at Wyckoff Ford. On the 6th and 7th the regiment participated in the battle of the Wilderness, without loss on the 6th, but on the second day losing 35 in killed and wounded. On the morning of the 8th the regiment proceeded by a forced march to Spottsylvania C. H. During the evening of the 8th, while attempting to cross an almost impassable swamp, a portion of the regiment was attacked, the enemy making an attempt to capture that portion engaged,
