American Civil War

SIXTEENTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

The regiment advanced rapidly through the woods a quarter of a mile, when, coming to an open field in full sight of the battery and the enemy's line of skirmishers who were strongly posted behind a stone fence, it halted. Throwing the right of the line of skirmishers well forward into a house and some out-buildings, the enemy's skirmishers were soon dislodged and commenced falling back, at which moment the whole line was advanced and the regiment ordered forward at double-quick to gain a stone wall about four hundred yards from the enemy's battery.
