using Company A, Captain Swan, on the right, and a company of sharpshooters, Lieutenant Burns, from the left of the regiment for that purpose, and advanced them three or four hundred yards, at the same time connecting my regiment per order, with a small squadron of cavalry on the left of the main road. At this time the fire from a battery the enemy had planted on the right of the road on a hill some twelve or fifteen yards to the front was annoying the cavalry in the rear and our battery; we were ordered forward that our skirmishers might pick off the gunners and silence it if possible.
