This position they held during the afternoon until 5 o'clock, when the enemy succeeded in breaking our line near the center of the 1st division. A portion succeed in getting through the gap before the rebels closed, the only place by which they could escape. Colonel Smith remaining to see that all his men understood the order, and the position they were in, was captured and robbed of his watch and pocket-book.
