The 7th left Monroe for Virginia on the 5th of September, 1861, in command of Colonel Grosvenor, its muster rolls showing the names of 884 officers and enlisted men. The regiment lay on the Upper Potomac duriug the winter, and was engaged in the disastrous action at Ball's Bluff, being in Lander's brigade of Stone's division.
