Michigan in the Civil War

SEVENTEENTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

Colonel Swift says: " On the 12th of May, in the terrific charge made on the rebel works, we lost 23 killed, 73 wounded, and 98 missing; total 194, out of 225 that went into action in this charge. Never did men fight with more desperate valor than did the 17th on this occasion, but owing to our left giving way before a superior force we were surrounded in the dense-Woods and lost many taken prisoners. "
On the 16th of May the regiment was detailed as engineer troops, and during the remainder of the year served as such.
