SEVENTEENTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

Meanwhile the 1st and 2d brigades, having become engaged, found the enemy in superior force, and the 1st Michigan sharpshooters and 60th Ohio (the latter of the 1st brigade) had been repulsed with considerable loss from a very commanding position, leaving many of their wounded on the field, while the 2d brigade, which occupied the extreme right, was in danger of being flanked and cut off. At this juncture the commander of the 2d brigade sent back to division headquarters for assistance, and the 17th was ordered to advance.
