SEVENTEENTH REGIMENT INFANTRY
"On the morning of the 9th of May, 1864, the division of General Willcox moved upon the enemy in the vicinity of Spottsylvania Court House. We found the enemy in force, occupying a commanding position on the Ny river, and the 2d brigade was ordered to cross the river and feel of the enemy. Romer's 2d New York battery, being brought into position, opened fire, and the 17th was temporarily detached from the 1st brigade to support it.
