SEVENTEENTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

The gallant charge made by this regiment on the stone walls behind which the enemy with his batteries was strongly posted, gave it the name of the ' Stonewall Regiment, ' by which it was known throughout the army, and which has gone with it into the history of the war. " The poem below referred to was written by Captain Campbell, of the 17th, a graduate of the University. It covers the march of his regiment to the field and its fight at South Mountain, to which the extract included refers.
