Second Regiment Cavalry
The black horse rode by General Sheridan on his celebrated ride from Winchester up the Shenandoah Valley when he turned the tide of battle in favor of the Union arms, and won out of a most disastrous route one of the most glorious and important victories of the war, was presented to him by Colonel Archibald Campbell, of the 2d Michigan Cavalry, and had been given to the colonel when he entered the army by the citizens of Port Huron. This horse had been raised in St. Clair county in this State.
" The heart of the steed and the heart of the master Were beating like prisoners assaulting their walls; Impatient to be where the battle-field calls. Every nerve of the charger was strained to full play, With Sheridan only ten miles away."
