The enemy had two batteries on a range of hills three-quarters of a mile in front, and south of the position occupied by the Union troops. The 33d and 85th Indiana made a demonstration on the left of the enemy to draw him out or charge his batteries according to circumstances.
A heavy engagement soon ensued, the Union forces making a determined fight, but it was a hopeless struggle; finally the Union troops succumbed to largely superior numbers, and a large portion of the force surrendered.
The trains and artillery were nearly Surrounded, when the two battalions of the 2d Michigan took a position to cover their retreat, and by a heavy skirmish fire from their Colt's revolvers,
