Troops for The Civil War
Raising the Troops
which was continued until May 14th following. Townships, wards, and cities were at this time also empowered by the Legislature to raise money by tax for the purpose of paying bounties to volunteers, not exceeding two hundred dollars to each soldier.
At the commencement of this year there was pending the call of the President, of October 17th, 1863, for Michigan's quota of 300, 000 men, assigned
at 11, 298.
"On the 1st of February the following order was issued from Washington:
" 'Executive Mansion, February 14th, 1864.
" ' Ordered: That a draft for five hundred thousand men, to serve for three years or during the war, be made on the 10th day of March next, for the military service of the United States, crediting or deducting therefrom so many as may have been enlisted or drafted into the service prior to the 1st day of March, and not heretofore credited.
