In making a draft under the existing law, it was provided that fifty per cent be added to the number required to cover exemptions, etc., the quota actually called for to be taken in the order of numerical precedence from the whole number drawn. The total number drafted in the State was 6, 383. Of these, 261 were delivered at the general rendezvous at Grand Rapids, 643 furnished acceptable substitutes (43 of whom deserted before reaching rendezvous), 1, 626 paid each $300 commutation money, 1, 596 were exempted for physical disability, 330 as aliens, 204 for unsuitableness of age, and 1, 069 failed to report.
