U. S. Civil War

NINTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

I look upon this fight of the 9th Michigan Infantry as one of the most gallant of the war, and for which the regiment has never received a proper degree of credit, having in a manner received the reproach which should have attached solely to Colonel Lester, of the 3d Minnesota, whose refusal to allow his regiment and Hewitt's battery to go into the fight was the sole cause of the capture of Murfreesboro.
