Colonel Parkhurst says:
In this battle (Murfreesboro) five companies (A, C, E, G, and K) of the 9th, four companies being detached and on duty at tullahoma, and one company being also detached and on duty as provost guard of the city of Murfreesboro, numbering about two hundred and fifty men, fought a force of about three thousand cavalry, under the immediate command of the rebel General N. B. Forrest. The fight commenced at 4 o'clock in the morning by the rebel force, about 2, 000 strong, charging upon the camp of the regiment, but the timely warning of the camp guard enabled me to get my men in position to receive the charge,
