U. S. Civil War

NINTH REGIMENT INFANTRY

Captain Charles V. DeLand, company C, 9th Michigan Volunteers, deserves especial notice for cool and gallant conduct throughout the action, and the fearless manner in which he led his company as skirmishers in pursuit of the enemy when repulsed; also First Lieutenant Hiram Barrows, company A, same regiment, for the tenacity with which he held his ground although sorely pressed by the enemy.
The loss of the detachment of the 9th Michigan Volunteers has been very severe for the number engaged, amounting to one officer and twelve men killed, and three officers and seventy-five men wounded.
