U. S. Civil War
NINTH REGIMENT INFANTRY
Lieutenant A. M. Dobbelaire, A. D. C, of my own staff, and fifteen cavalry of my own escort, and when eight miles north of Murfreesboro I met the 1st Kentucky Cavalry and 3d battalion of the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry returning, under the impression that I had been cut off at Shelbyville and needed reinforcements. I directed them to turn back with me and endeavor to overtake the force recently despatched from Murfreesboro under General Dumont, and pushed on all night for Lebanon. The forces under General Dumont having halted at 1 o'clock on the morning of the 5th instant within four miles of that place, we succeeded in overtaking them, and rested until day break.
